CIA ENDURES ANOTHER MAJOR HIT IN LEBANON AS HEZBOLLAH PUBLICLY BLOWS THE COVERS OF 10 OF ITS OFFICERS

Hezbollah took to the airwaves earlier this month, and in a broadcast from the television station al-Manar, identified 10 CIA operatives in Lebanon. Al-Manar reported that those named were CIA officers, who all had been cloaked under diplomatic cover. It further purported that their assignment was the supervision of the spy rings in Lebanon. The station employed video animation to simulate alleged rendezvous between the aforementioned officers and informants on the CIA payroll, at Starbucks and Pizza Hut locations. Perhaps most disturbing to the CIA was the Hezbollah claim that these rendezvous occurred more than once at the same place, a clear disregard for agency guidelines, whereby the chances of exposure are increased unnecessarily. The official CIA response to the current incident has been the complete denial of the Hezbollah declarations, it countering that accusations made by a known terrorist organization and its propaganda machine, al-Manar, inherently are suspect.

Despite CIA accounts to the contrary, the latest episode marks yet another serious setback for the agency in the intensifying espionage battles being waged in Lebanon. Anonymous officials in the American intelligence community have acknowledged that the CIA‘s organization of spies there was partially undone because of a double agent. Furthermore, Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah head, asserted this past June that his group had uncovered two CIA operatives. Unknown is whether the already referred to double agent was counted among the two accused spies. The CIA’s failures have come notwithstanding its heightened awareness of the need for caution and diligence in dealing with informants, following the mass roundup of Israeli operatives in Lebanon two years ago.
