ISRAELI CITIZEN BEING TRIED IN ABSENTIA IN EGYPTIAN ESPIONAGE PROCEEDINGS

The Egyptian daily publication Al-Ahram identified the purported Mossad accomplice of accused Israeli spy Bashar Ibrahim Abu-Zeid as Ophir Harari in its account on February 24th of the spy trial currently underway in Egypt. Jordanian engineer Abu-Zeid was an employee of the leading Egyptian mobile service provider Mobinil, and allegedly attempted to smuggle 300 SIM cards concealed in a toy to Harari. The secreted contents of the toy were intercepted by Egyptian authorities this past March. Harari’s trial is being held in absentia. Abu-Zeid’s name came to light during connected espionage proceedings wherein four Egyptian employees of Mobinil are suspected of putting up a communications tower standing 70 meters tall close to the Egyptian-Israeli border as a means to shift the transmission of internet based telephone calls to an Israeli intelligence installation. According to Al-Ahram, a comprehensive report furnished for that trial related that about one million minutes of international telephone communications, primarily of Egyptian officials, were transferred to Israel via the questionable antenna located near the Egyptian-Israeli border. Egypt has been zealously hunting out supposed spy activities by Israel in the wake of the revolution’s onset a year ago. Egyptian authorities claimed in March of last year to have exposed an Israeli spy network. Three months later Ilan Grapel, a student of dual American-Israeli citizenship, was charged with working for Israeli intelligence.
