RETIRED RUSSIAN COLONEL ACCUSED OF BEING AMERICAN SPY

Formal espionage charges were filed last week against Vladimir Lazar, a retired colonel, for allegedly providing classified topographical maps to the Pentagon. Investigators asserted said information could be employed in organizing military operations against Russia and was applicable in coordinating missile strikes. According to the prosecution, Lazar, a former member of the topography service, bought a disk containing in excess of 7000 images of Russian terrain from a Russian collector with whom he became acquainted via the Internet four years ago. He purportedly then proceeded to secrete the disk and transport it to Belarus where he turned it over to former classmate Alexander Lesment by means of a third party. Lesment, a Russian national, supposedly is an American agent, ordered by the Defense Intelligence Agency to obtain classified maps. No details were given as to when Lazar’s arrest took place or where he is now. If Lazar is found guilty of espionage, he could face a maximum 20 year prison term. The current episode comes on the heels of the sentencing roughly two months ago of a Russian space engineer convicted of handing over classified missile information to the CIA.
