ANOTHER TWO RUSSIAN DIPLOMATIC PERSONNEL DEPART CANADA ON THE HEELS OF THE DELISLE ESPIONAGE SCANDAL

CTV News reported last week that two additional Russian diplomatic personnel have left Canada and gone home, following the arrest of naval officer Jeffrey Delisle in mid January on charges of turning over classified information to a foreign entity, and subsequent speculation the recipient was Russia. The already referred to defense attaché in Ottawa and consulate worker in Toronto joined four colleagues, whose earlier return home was described in a CTV News account as expulsions imposed by the Canadian government in retaliation for the Delisle affair. As with the previous departures, the Russian embassy stressed that there was no connection to the spy claims, and that the term of service simply had concluded. Regarding the particular data that fell into foreign hands, sources indicated the possibility of information on underwater dead zones, whereby Russian submarines would be able to infiltrate sensitive regions. Perhaps arms system data was passed on as well. The relocation of some of the military staff at Canada’s East Coast intelligence center was ordered as a safeguard. Delisle has a court date on the 28th at which a bail hearing will be scheduled. His attorney recently withdrew from the proceedings without explanation.
